BRUNO REIDAL, CONFESSION OF A MURDERER / BRUNO REIDAL

23/09/2021, 19:15, TRIANON
27/09/2021, 22:15, RIVIERA

The French countryside, 1905. In the woods surrounding his village, young Bruno Reidal violently kills a boy and then turns himself in. In prison he is questioned for weeks by a group of three doctors who try to get him to revisit the past, unable to understand his murderous instincts. Based on a true story, Vincent Le Port’s debut outlines, with clinical precision, the portrait of a manic killer, masterfully maintains a balance between vulnerability and absolute chilling elements and studies how religious devotion, patriarchy and repressed sexuality become entangled in the root of all Evil.

FRANCE | 2021 | COLOR | DCP | 101’ | FRENCH

South-Eastern France, 1905. 17-year-old Bruno Reidal kills and decapitates a 12-year-old. He surrenders immediately and the authorities send him for psychiatric evaluation, whereby it is decided that he should be committed to a mental institution. Vince Le Port’s debut deals with a story that makes your blood run cold. Not only due to its subject but also due to its distanced, exploratory look on Reidal’s diaries and his conversations with the early therapists of the era. How does the root take hold and how does the blossom of Evil bloom? How are genes, family, religiosity and repressed sexuality intertwined? If there’s a film examining thoroughly the idea of murderous impulse, it is this muffled, concrete debut. I.D.

    GREAT FREEDOM / GROSSE FREIHEIT

    GREAT FREEDOM / GROSSE FREIHEIT

In post-war Germany and while homosexuality is punished as a criminal offense, a man is sent to prison repeatedly because of his sexual preferences. As the film spans twenty years of his life, his imprisonment becomes an ongoing struggle for survival and for the preservation of his rights regarding what he defines as desire and independence. A courageous drama and simultaneously an unconventional love story, with the great performance of the up-and-coming Franz Rogowski (“Transit”), this bold film won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Adult animation, rampantly psychedelic, inspired by the progressive universe of the 70s, “Crytpozoo'' comprises a dazzling kaleidoscope of colours and imagination. In it, hunters and protectors of mythic creatures battle for the right to a utopia, the collapse of the capitalistic instinct and the survival of diversity. As if “Jurassic Park” were dipped in psychoactive substances with the voices of Michael Cera and Angeliki Papoulia. Winner of the Next Innovator Award at Sundance Film Festival, of a Special Mention at the Berlin International Film Festival and of the Satoshi Kon Award at the Fantasia Film Festival.

THE FIRST DEATH OF JOANA / A PRIMEIRA MORTE DE JOANA

THE FIRST DEATH OF JOANA / A PRIMEIRA MORTE DE JOANA

South Brazil in the summer. Thirteen-year-old Joana bids a beloved relative farewell. Her first experience of sadness is accompanied by an unanswered enigma: is it true that “aunt Rosa” died without ever having been with a man? Along with her best friend, Joana embarks on an investigation into Rosa's past, realising that, like her, all the women in her family harbour a secret. A brilliant coming-of-age film, which touches on various aspects of the psychological makeup of teenagers through the life and secrets of others, through loss and friendship, exalting sexuality which is always unexpectedly awakened.

HIT THE ROAD / JADDEH KHAKI

The film begins in the middle of a road trip of unknown destination and origin. A family of four is secretly headed to the West. No one knows, nor should they, where they are going. Especially the six-year-old son (make note of the name Rayan Sarlak). A dilapidated SUV that crosses the lace-like Persian mountains, becomes the ideal vehicle for a moving and pithy debut. Exemplary abstract, Jafar Panahi's son watches silent desires as they transform into blasting music and go on to escape through the open car windows on their way to encounter notions such as family and selfless love.
