Can we atone for past actions that still haunt us? Sung-Gong is a timid 18-year-old student, who’s forced by his violent and oppressive schoolmates to participate in a the gang rape of a drugged girl. 10 years later, this horrific incident still weighs heavily on the lonely young man’s conscience. When he runs into the victim by accident, he decides to approach her.

As they build a trusting and intimate relationship, Sung-gong struggles with the idea of revealing his true identity and tries to atone for the past in any way possible. Lee Don-ku’s solid narrative debut stirs clear from the revenge tale cliches currently infesting contemporary Korean cinema, delivering an emotionally savage but a lot more humane and substantial film.

With two memorable performances by two newcomers, he explores a rather thorny concept with enviable constraint, building a lean, slow-burning and eventually heartrending thriller about the unbearable weight of guilt and wounds the never heal. Th.P.
