Harmony Lessons

The last Berlinale’s sleeper-hit comes from Kazakhstan, introducing the indisputably talented newcomer Emir Baigazin, whose first film approaches school bullying from a very unusual, transcendental perspective.

The last Berlinale’s sleeper-hit comes from Kazakhstan, introducing the indisputably talented newcomer Emir Baigazin, whose first film approaches school bullying from a very unusual, transcendental perspective. With admirable confidence, the director draws inspiration from Gus Van Sant’s impressionistic gaze - usually evident in his more personal projects - to build an intense revenge story that is bound to shock audiences with its unexpected maturity.

Aslan is a 13-year-old boy who lives with his grandmother in an isolated community on the Central Asian steppe. The boy goes to school every day only to be faced with Bolat and his gang, who terrorize kids in the courtyard in order to extort them for protection money. When a new student arrives at the school, Aslan will find the support he always needed in Mirsain’s face, fueling his enraged reaction to the daily violence that’s lurking in the halls and corridors of the school.
