Katz’s sadistic thriller gives the idiocy contest that is your run-of-the-mill reality show and the greediness of a society addicted to instant fame and fast cash the big screen treatment.
Craig is a family man who has just lost his job and is facing eviction. In a daze, he stops by his old hang-out where he bumps into old school buddy Vince. Their friendly banter is interrupted by a wealthy couple that, for some strange reason, insists on buying them a round of drinks.
Their generosity is followed by a series of seemingly innocent (at first) dares. If the two buddies deliver, they stand to win a tidy sum. But as the cash prizes get bigger and the dares more outrageous, Craig and Vince will soon have to decide how far they’re willing to go for dough.
Katz’s sadistic thriller gives the idiocy contest that is your run-of-the-mill reality show and the greediness of a society addicted to instant fame and fast cash the big screen treatment. And while “Cheap Thrills” remains unashamedly manipulative, it’s still annoyingly entertaining, writing a new chapter in exploitation cinema history. N.S.
