Computer Chess
Andrew Bujalski, the guru of DIY cinema, turns the clock further back to the 80s, documenting an imaginary chess convention where chess maniacs battle primal computers, and then computers take turns outwitting each other!
Man against machine, artificial intelligence against human intellect. Do you remember when Yuri Kasparov used to triumph over IBM’s super computer? It was 1996 and the whole world would gasp at the limitations of artificial intelligence. Andrew Bujalski, the guru of DIY cinema, turns the clock further back to the 80s, documenting an imaginary chess convention where chess maniacs battle primal computers, and then computers take turns outwitting each other!
In the background, geeky software designers are trying to push the limits of the machines they have created, while the hotel where the chess convention is taking place has fallen prey to collective madness, reminiscent of a class trip gone wild. Bujalski dusts off the dated vacuum tube cameras and has the cast don granny glasses and lounge on beanbag chairs in a hilarious, yet accurate, reconstruction of the 80s. This is one delightful mockumentary that could very well earn the same cult status as “Zelig” in the years to come. Ph.V.
