The Mend

When you've seen every possible storyline turned into a movie in every possible way (and sometimes, more than once), then every time you come across something fresh, unpretentious or authentic on the silver screen, you can't help but feel the excitement of an explorer who has finally discerned a strip of land after a long journey at sea.

When you've seen every possible storyline turned into a movie in every possible way (and sometimes, more than once), then every time you come across something fresh, unpretentious or authentic on the silver screen, you can't help but feel the excitement of an explorer who has finally discerned a strip of land after a long journey at sea.

"The Mend" is exactly that kind of movie, the kind that stirs emotions, especially when it draws on something so obvious, yet delivers something totally unique. In modern-day New York, the debauched Mat (Josh Lucas in a wonderfully unexpected role) reunites with his much more stable brother Alan, in order to lay low and recharge until his next adventure. In the meantime, his much more settled-down brother will realize that his life isn't as settled as he thought it was.

In his first feature, director John Magary borrows elements from the Nouvelle Vague, Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese all at once, without ever referencing Wes Anderson's stylized universe, and that can only be considered a triumph. Ph.V.
