Elliott Smith, plagued by addiction and depression, died in 2003 at age 34 from two self-inflicted stab wounds to the chest. A self-taught musician, he channeled his demons into his songwriting. His performances where heartrendingly honest, his lyrics were always enigmatic, his delivery was cathartically direct and his talent on the guitar was unparalleled.

Nickolas Rossi's documentary on the Elliott Smith phenomenon is a respectful tribute and an honest attempt at finding some answers to the countless questions surrounding this idiosyncratic artist, who somehow managed to become a legend without ever gracing any magazine covers.

But what "Heaven Adores You" mainly focuses on, is the fact that no one, not even his nearest and dearest, really knew anything about him. Just like one of his lyrics so eloquently puts it, " I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow". T.Th.
