The Pearl Button

27/9/2015, 20:00, Δαναός 1

A living, breathing tapestry of an entire nation, The Pearl Button connects the genocide of Chile's indigenous population to Pinochet's political assassinations. The insightful "Nostalgia for the Light" director turns the camera on the turbulent history of his own country, winning the Silver Berlin Bear for Best Script in the last Berlinale.

If Chile’s endless coastline is barricaded by volcanoes, mountains and glaciers, the oceans surely contain the age-old voices of the indigenous people, the seafarers who arrived from England and the political prisoners of 20th Century dictatorships. Some say the water has a memory. Some say it even has a voice. The insightful director turns them both into imagery, following a line of thought that takes him from the country’s liquid frontier, coasts along Chile’s socio-political trajectory and goes all the way up to the sky and the origins of the universe itself. Winner of the Silver Berlin Bear for Best Script in the last Berlinale.
