Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles

3/10/2015, 19:00, Ταινιοθήκη της Ελλάδος

A seminal work in the French filmmaker’s filmography, this is the groundbreaking story of a widow who does housework and turns tricks at the same time, featuring prominently in Sight and Sound’s 50 best films of all time. Screening from a ditigally restored print on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

In her Brussels apartment, a widow does housework and takes care of her teenage son, offering men sex for money when he’s not around. At 25 years old, Chantal Akerman directed a film that attempted to abolish the main characteristics of cinema itself, namely the dramatization of its main character. How interesting can the daily life of a woman who cleans, cooks dinner, helps her son with his homework, straightens up the house and goes to sleep, only to wake up and do it all over again the next day really be? And does it get more interesting be- cause she offers paid sex while her son isn’t around? Akerman answers this question, turning the daily agonies of an ordinary housewife into a real thriller, while at the same time conducting a fascinating experiment that goes above and beyond entertainment, culminating in a shocking finale that nobody could have possibly predicted. A seminal film in feminist cinema and an enduring presence in film critics "best of" lists, "Jeanne Dielman" will be screened from a digitally restored print on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.
