Shoah

26/9/2015, 15:00, Ταινιοθήκη της Ελλάδος

Nine hours of personal confessions straight from the mouth of Holocaust survivors, both victims and former Nazi torturers. A documentary marathon, a movie testimonial and a historical record, this poignant masterpiece, shot for 11 years in 14 countries, will screen non-stop on the occasion of its 30-year anniversary.

Claude Lanzmann travelled the world for 11 years, looking for Holocaust survivors, trying to convince them to recount their most painful memories. This monumental film was the result of 350hrs of footage, tracing every step of an unthinkable mechanism of human extermination, without ever resorting to archival footage. Lanz- mann makes a point of never using any visual aids from the past. Holding on to the present with everything he’s got, he focuses on the faces of his characters and allows the horror to unfold through their worlds and personal experiences. You don't need anything else. Audiences form images in their heads, as the director transcends the horror, the rage and the pain to make a monumental historical testimony and the most important holocaust chronicle ever to be filmed.
