DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX / OF GODS AND MEN

Based on true events, "Of Gods and Men" follows the last weeks of small group of Cistercian monks living in Algeria in the 90s. When Islamic fundamentalists issue an ultimatum ordering all foreigners to leave the country, the monks are forced to choose between abandoning their monastery or disobeying and risking their lives. Jumping between the monastery's microcosm and the outside world, Xavier Beauvois's camera illuminates the inner torment of his protagonists who are forced to reexamine the true nature of their mission: should they become martyrs or try to survive at all costs? A primarily aesthetical and religious cinematic experience, "Of Gods and Men" was perhaps the most important film presented in this year's Cannes Festival.
