The Third Part of the Night
Based on his own father's experiences in Nazi-occupied Poland, who allowed lice to feed on his blood in the name of a German anti-typhus vaccine, Zulawski delivers a feverish, elliptical debut, turning a little-known aspect of WWII into an existential horror movie.
A man witnesses the murder of his wife and son by German soldiers, before making a narrow escape. He tries to join the Resistance but ends up hunted again and is forced to seek refuge in the house of a pregnant woman who looks surprisingly like his wife.
His involvement is a series of bizarre medical experiments and his guilt over the loss of his family, will send him on a downward spiral of nightmares and hallucinations.
Based on his own father's experiences in Nazi-occupied Poland, who allowed lice to feed on his blood in the name of a German anti-typhus vaccine, Zulawski delivers a feverish, elliptical debut, turning a little-known aspect of WWII into an existential horror movie.
With the camera indulging in some frantic maneuvering, the Polish director uses post-Apocalyptic imagery to depict a world on the brink of disaster, while launching a devastating attack against conventional cinema. Τh.P.
