Wavemakers

"Wavemakers" reveals a fascinating and relatively unknown chapter in music history, featuring the most perfect pairing of man and technology the world has ever known. Consider yourselves warned!

Amidst the chaos of WWI, young radio telegrapher Maurice Martenot was envisioning a device that would turn raw electrical pulses into melody. What he eventually came up with was as fragile as it was magical: the Ondes Martenot, a musical instrument so sensitive and so structurally complicated that, with the aid of a talented player, could produce a sonic range unlike anything you have ever encountered in latter-day electronics.

Starting in 1928, the Ondes Martenot was widely used in the film and music industries, from Édith Piaf and Radiohead records to early Fritz Lang movies, not to mention Paul Thomas Anderson’s much more recent “There Will Be Blood”. Caroline Martel reconstructs the story of a treasure that’s in serious danger of becoming extinct, while meeting some of the few people who have managed to definitively capture its charm, like Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

“Wavemakers” reveals a fascinating and relatively unknown chapter in music history, featuring the most perfect pairing of man and technology the world has ever known. Consider yourselves warned! N.S.

    Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

"Art is not a mirror to reflect the world, but a hammer with which to shape it." The above quote by Vladimir Mayakovsky opens ?Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer? and by the time the end credits roll, it seems more timely than ever before.

They've got careers that span decades, they've sang in hit songs, they've performed in front of huge audiences, while their CVs read like a Who's Who of pop, rock and soul music. And on top of all that, they've got voices that could make established artists go green with envy.

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone

One of the most influential bands of the "Madchester"movement, the Stone Roses weren't just a hugely successful rock band, they defined the global music scene of the 80s and 90s. Their debut record was voted as one of the most significant British albums in history, yet the Stone Roses packed it in quite early, tangled up in legal battles and plagued by creative inertia.
