The Wrestlers - Uttara

The wild Bengali landscape becomes the stage for a tragic love triangle. Nemai and Balaram are old friends, working together in the local railway. They spend their free time practicing their greatest passion ? wrestling. However, Balaram’s marriage to the innocent Uttara drives them apart. At the same time, the arrival of a Hindu fundamentalist group causes an unexpected outbreak of violence in their village. Juxtaposing images of exquisite beauty with surrealist scenes, The Wrestlers is an enigmatic meditation on passion and intolerance that earned Dasgupta the Venice Film Festival Ward for Best Director in 2003.
