Ellen Keller used to say that being blind cuts you off things, but being deaf cuts you off people. Maybe this was the reason that propelled Paul and Sally, the elderly deaf couple in the film, to receive a surgical implant that introduces them to the unknown world of sound. Following their daily routine to their operation, the couple’s daughter and director Irene Taylor Brodsky never ceases to raise difficult questions. Why did her parents decide to undergo such a painful procedure? Will waking up into a new reality be a pleasant if somewhat frustrating surprise, or will it throw their lives into chaos? Can their relationship remain intact? Only time and love hold the answers. Hear and Now received the Audience Award at Sundance Festival.
