The use of technology and Man’s need to dominate, have proven in less than a century that human life has lost all sacredness. The Nazis, the Allies, the Americans, the Soviets, have all conducted bombings causing grief and devastation from afar. ‘20 Days in Mariupol’, about the first days of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, is not only proof of the importance of war reporting. It is a desperate attempt, via the depiction of agony, to surpass the news-informed coldness, in order to face our situation. No words describe the brutality on screen. You pray for it to end, unbearable as it is, you pray for a miracle to save us from what we have become. Nothing else is left. I.D.

MSTYSLAV CHERNOV
Ukrainian war correspondent and writer, born in 1985. He has reported on the civil war in Syria, the war in Mosul, Iraq, the war in Donbas, the invasion in Ukraine. For this particular reporting on the Mariupol siege he received a Pulitzer Prize, while the recognition for his work the past 15 years is constant, rendering him one of the most compassionate, important reporters on the war field.
