X: The Unheard Music (1986)

Right from the beginning The Unheard Music was a deeply personal and independent project ? just like the band it attempts to portray. Despite critics’ raving reviews, the Californian band X’s music was met the indifference of recording companies, radio stations and the majority of the public alike. No wonder: their music reflected a deep urban discontent and a built-in rage blasting out through bombastic sounds and harsh lyrics. Following in the same footsteps, Morgan’s film twists its way through the trappings of the conventional documentary to capture the zeitgeist of an era and portray the quiet desperation of a generation who sang the demise of the American dream.
