"Nova Lituania" and "Honeyland" won Golden Athena awards at the 25th Athens International Film Festival

The awards announcement and the Greek premiere of Costa-Gavras' new film, "Adults in the Room" concluded the Closing Ceremony of the 25th Athens International Film Festival. 

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AWARDS

The jury of the International Competition section of the 25th Athens International Film Festival is composed of:

Whit Stillman (President of the Jury), director
Hannah Patterson, director and producer 
Michele Valley, actor
Humberto Moureira, film critic 
Birgit Kohler, co-director of the Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art and member of the programming committee of the Berlinale Forum.

Golden Athena Award to “Nova Lituania”, by Karolis Kaupinis

In the jury’s own words:

“For its tonally brilliant, historically astute, utterly original exploration of the most endearing utopian scheme of the past century the International Competition Jury of the 2019 Athens International Film Festival gives the Best Film award to Nova Lituania”.

City οf Athens Best Director Award to “Α Colony”, by Geneviève Dulude-De Celles

In the jury’s own words:

“A fresh, subtle approach invites the audience to experience the journey of a teenage girl as she strives to find her place in the world. For the skillful handling of this subject the best director award goes to Geneviève Dulude-De Celles”.

Best Screenplay Award to “House of Hummingbird”,  by Bora Kim

In the jury’s own words: “For its delicate, nuanced portrait of a 14 year old girl who feels alienated from her family and is trying to negotiate her role as a young woman in the fast-changing world of South Korea in the early 90s, the Award for Best Screenplay goes to Bora Kim for The House of Hummingbird”.

Special Mention to “Burning Cane”, by Philip Youmans

In the jury’s own words:

“The jury would like to give a special mention to a young filmmaker who has surprised us with his obvious talent, his creative use of cinematic means and with his aesthetic boldness. This special mention is in support of a filmmaker at the beginning of his career. It goes to Phillip Youmans for Burning Cane.”

Fischer Audience Award to “Les Misérables”, by Ladj Ly

In the words of the Marketing Director of the Athenian Brewery, Laurent Demoulin: “ It is a great pleasure to be here as a representative for Fischer, a film-friendly brand which has supported films and documentaries in Greece for a decade. I would like to congratulate all the people of the festival  who once more this year have organised a successful event. Referring to the audience, a great director once said: “ If a million people watch a filmI I hope they end up watching a million films”. Films render the audience the festival protagonist, giving them the chance to vote for their favourite film”.

Greek Film Critics Association Award “Les Misérables”, by Ladj Ly

In the words of the Greek Film Critics Association (PEKK):

“For being a contemporary realistic film that avoids becoming melodramatic but takes a fundamental stand on the matter of violence and the brutality of social reality as it occurs in modern-day large-city ghettos”.

“For its visual excellence, compelling observational narrative set in  North Macedonia reflecting the cycle of life revealing the importance of family and social cohesion, teaching us so much and in particular the value of keeping the eco-system in balance. As the strong and resilient Hatidze said "They gave us half, we’ll leave half".

Special Mention to “Talking About Trees”, by Suhaib Gasmelbari 

In the jury’s own words:

“Firstly,  for a story of passion for cinema within cinema,  of marginalized repressed film-making which so richly deserves recognition by audiences across the world who are free to gather together in a way that those in Sudan were not. As they said at the end of the film "We are the best optimists, because our hope was refined by the toughest kind of despair’”.
