Athens International Film Festival

The Palme d'Or winner in Athens! "Parasite"is the opening film of the 25th Athens International Film Festival!

The celebrated Palme d'Or winner of this year's Cannes Film Festival will be screened on the opening ceremony of the 25th Athens International Film Festival!

Following the announcement of the poster, we present the opening film of the 25th anniversary edition of our festival, which is the celebrated Palme d'Or winner of this year's Cannes Film Festival.

This year’s jury, which included among others Yorgos Lanthimos, Pawel Pawlikowski and Alejandro González Iñárritu, collectively decided to present the coveted Palme d’Or award to “Parasite” and  Joon-ho Bong of South Korea. The award itself was in recognition of a variety of things.

On the one hand it was to honour one of the greatest directors of contemporary asian film, responsible for many award-winning films (“Memories of Murder”, “Mother”) and  for epic fantasy films with a large fan base around the world (“Host”, “Snowpiercer”).

On the other hand it was to praise what was genuinely one of the few cinematic surprises in recent years.  A film which succeeds in combining black humour, sardonic political satire, a thriller, timely social commentary, family drama and clever allegory all in the same unpredictable and wild concoction.

Wanting to honour the director’s expressed wishes not to reveal important aspects of the elaborate plot of the film, the only thing we can say with certainty when trying to describe “Parasite”  is that it is a story about a family of four small-time crooks who are trying to survive in one of the underprivileged  areas of modern-day Seoul.

A glimmer of hope appears on the horizon, however, when the family’s young son finds a job working in the luxurious house of a multinational company owner.  In a calculating manner he manipulates circumstances so that the remaining members of his family of pariahs can also benefit from the situation without ever imagining what is about to happen.

What follows, the details of which viewers should discover for themselves,  is a cunningly entertaining and ingenious roller-coaster of tension, twists and a risky balance between what is funny and what is dramatic, which the 50-year old director succeeds in carrying out with fierce control of the subject matter, immaculate artistry and a cunning script which becomes all the more thrilling as secrets are revealed.

Raring to excite audiences in the upcoming film season and to rightfully earn more awards, “Parasite” stands proud in 2019 as one of the best films and one that will intrigue viewers during the screening and stay with them for a while after it.

The Athens International Film Festival would like to thank Seven Films for kindly granting us permission to screen the film.
