Athens International Film Festival is screening the legendary «The Thing» by John Carpenter in 4K digital restoration
The Athens International Film Festival presents one of the best sci-fi films of all time as you have never watched it before: for the first time in Greece in recent 4K digital print edited by the director himself, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary from its first release, «The Thing» by John Carpenter is screened at midnight on Saturday February 10th , at the Cinobo OPERA cinema.
It may be that in its time "The Thing" was not a commercial success and was misunderstood by a large number of critics. But here we are, 40 years later, that this unforgettable combination of horror, science fiction and paranoid allegory has been triumphantly reappraised and is now hailed not only as a classic creation of its kind but also as one of the all-time greats.
In fact, it was voted one of the best films in cinema history by Sight and Sound magazine's recent (and prominent) list and enjoys an equal reputation in a similar vote by Empire magazine. It was named by Rolling Stone magazine as the 21st greatest science fiction creation ever made, ranked 12th on the equivalent list by Britain's Time Out, and according to its director, John Carpenter, it is the best film of his career.
A remake of «The Thing From Another World», one of the most memorable sci-fi films of the 1950s, «The Thing» not only enriches its predecessor in atmosphere and horror, but also continues to invite many and varied interpretations by telling what happens when, at an isolated base in Antarctica, a group of scientists are confronted by a deadly alien entity that has the ability to take over their insides and take their form.
