The Athens International Film Festival presents the 4Κ digitally restored «RAGING BULL» for one exclusive screening in Greece

The Athens International Film Festival adds Greece to the map of countries that will watch exclusively in movie theaters the much anticipated, digitally restored in 4K print of the best American film of the 80s, the pinnacle of Martin Scorsese's filmography and with the Oscar awarded performance by Robert De Niro as Best Actor in a Leading Role. Do not miss the chance to watch, simultaneously with the rest of the world, in a brilliant print supervised by the director himself and for one and only premiere in Greece, the outstanding “Raging Bull”: Saturday, April 8th at IDEAL cinema.

In the late 70s, watching Scorsese gradually healing from a severe health adventure and a period of deep emotional and professional crisis, De Niro thought that the only way to help him find his lost enthusiasm was to involve him in a film project that would completely absorb him. However, a film starring a boxer and having as background the world of professional boxing was not something that Scorsese was interested in exploring with his camera. Nevertheless, De Niro's persistance persuaded him to try and find a minimum degree of connection with Jake La Motta's story and his meteoric course from high to low and from sin to redemption.

For the next two years, which was the time needed until “Raging Bull” reached the theaters, Martin Scorsese not only re-invented his old passion but also he stunningly captured it on screen, shooting the film with remarkable commitment. With him, Robert De Niro gave a new meaning to the sense of an actor's devotion to a role when he not only subjected himself to grueling physical training but also needed to gain 66 pounds, in order to play his character in the later and finally decadent period of his life.

However, the whole film is a real achievement: from the black and white expressionist photography which endows many scenes with a dreamlike, almost mythical sense, the cutting edge work in the field of sound and editing to the wonderful screenplay which offers archetypal and biblical dimensions to a seemingly simple, true story or the realistic performances by (the completely unknown then) Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarti, “Raging Bull” is a pure work of art and the last bright beacon of a brave artisitc era for the American cinema, which seems to have been lost forever.

Through the struggles of the beastly La Motta in and out of the boxing ring, Scorsese captures the lonely tormenting course of a dynastic and self-destructive male who irreparably hurts the ones he loves, and most of all himself. As his entourage and the whole world become to him an existential arena in which he is called upon to face and exorcize his countless personal demons, the film is transformed into a fierce, emotionally draining as well as cleansing experience, which carries the hero and the audience from the sewers of the male psyche to elevation and redemption.
