"The Rapture" chronicles the internal journey of an amoral telephone operator who turns into a religious fanatic and moves to the desert with her young daughter to await the Apocalypse, when she realizes she's not the only person to have seen a strange dream.

A hybrid thriller, magnificently photographed by Bojan Bazelli - a long-time collaborator or Abel Ferrara's - under the direction of Michael Tolkin, who penned "The Player" screenplay for Robert Altman. Tolkin coaxes one of the best female performances of all time out of Mimi Rogers, who constantly toys with the limits of morality.

The director and the cinematographer follow her spiritual journey like Cassavetes or Bergman would, leading up to a finale reminiscent of "Breaking the Waves". The radical ending infuriated both the critics and the audience when it was first released, totally missing the subtext and condemning the film as fundamentalist, which eventually drove tickets sales into the ground and the director into obscurity.
