Familiar Grounds
30-year-old Benoit still lives with his father, adopts teenage behaviours and wears “I like girls who like girls” T-shirts on dates. His sister, Maryse, is married to a boring husband and seems submerged in a recurrent everyday life. The strange visit from a man from the future will result in the start of a life-changing road trip for the two estranged siblings. Stéphane Lafleur uses the simplest of materials to create a restless black comedy filled with a fresh sense of humour and dysfunctional characters, as well as moving sequences. With the never-ending Canadian winter in the background, the film follows a well-created path of unhurried suspense, which leads to a delicious finale. Prize of the Ecumenical Jury in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival.
