Danilo Treles: The Famous Andalusian Musician

An English singer travels around the Greek countryside. He meets a strange creature, part man part fox, and together they start looking for Danilo Treles, a legendary musician from Andalusia. Tornes' craziest film wears its heart on its sleeve, starting with the title, which could conceivably allude to a Spanish surname but even the director himself could not deny the direct reference to the Greek language (Treles translates into madness).

Questioning modernism itself, Tornes stages a cinematic ritual around an invisible premise: the quest for a mythical name, a center of gravity that keeps changing, while at the same time providing the connective tissue for the most far-fetched free associations.

Tornes' larger-than-life allegory takes on a tactile, almost tangible, quality in a voyage brimming with symbolism from faraway lands, otherworldly creatures and visual gags with humorous undertones, where madness is the norm. The controversial scene with the Sudanese musician and the egg is possibly Tornes' most iconic moment. K.S.
