Night Train - Ye Che

Wu Hongyan is bailiff for a provincial Chinese court supervising female death row inmates convicted for crimes of passion. On weekends the 30-year-old Wu takes the train to the nearest city to attend the weekly ball of a lonely hearts agency, only to feel even more intensely alone and unloved. Night Train is a moving, evocatively shot elegy on human loneliness and isolation, while Wu’s character serves as the foundation on which director Yinan Diao paints a pessimistic portrait of modern China. The film was presented at Cannes Festival as part of the Un Certain Regard section.
