Alex is only fifteen, yet she is the carrier of a closely guarded secret that forced her family to leave Buenos Aires for a small coastal town in Uruguay. The sudden arrival of a plastic surgeon, his wife and their teenage son Alvaro threatens to blow the family’s quiet existence to pieces; because the truth is that Alex is suffering from an extremely rare medical condition, one that complicates her budding relationship with Alvaro even further. Displaying a unique compassion and kindness towards her characters, Lucía Puenzo gradually opens her cards to reveal a painful tale of sexual awakening. An affectionate inquiry into the delicate issue of hermaphrodism, Puenzo’s debut received the Youth Jury Award at the Critic’s Week of this year’s Cannes Festival.
