Persepolis

A brilliant adaptation of a best-selling comic book, a memoir of a bumpy coming of age and a tableau vivant of a country locked in a timewarp, Persepolis received an enthusiastic standing ovation at Cannes. Employing simply drawn 2D figures and making full use of its excellent voice cast (Chiara Mastroianni and her mother Catherine Deneuve are ideal as Satrapi and her mother) the film recounts the rebellions and upheavals of director Marjane Satrapi’s less-than-ordinary childhood and adolescence from 1978 ?the year of the Islamic Revolution- into the 90s. Persepolis received the Grand Jury Award at Cannes Film Festival.
