Based on one of John Waters’s most insane comedies, Hairspray is not your run-of-the-mill musical. Starring Tracy, a plump teenager determined not to let her love handles get in the way of dancing stardom and featuring a girdled John Travolta following in the footsteps of Divine, as well as Michelle Pfeiffer in high spirits as the uptight Velma Von Tussle (she’s really mean), Hairspray is a refreshingly kitschy and deliriously funny musical that dances political correctness to death.
