Nightfall
Based on the novel by David Goodis, Nightfall is one of the most underrated film noirs ? partly because it was made long after the genre has fallen out of favor with audiences. Displaying an admirable balance between romance and violence, the film revolves around two ordinary people (brilliant performances by Aldo Ray and Anne Bancroft) who find themselves on the run from criminals while at the same time trying to prove their innocence to the police. Genius cinematic economy, impeccable photography and an extended use of flash-back sequences, unraveling the characters’ background in an unorthodox chronological order, come together in one of the best late road noirs.
