The Leopard Man
Based on the Cornell Woolrich novel Black Alibi, the third Lewton/Turneur collaboration is an elaborate psychological thriller exploring the duo’s favorite theme of the interplay between reality and unreality. A small New Mexico town is terrorized by a string of brutal murders attributed to an escaped leopard that was featured as part of a night club number. However, the leopard’s owner begins to suspect that something else is at work. Thanks to his masterful use of sound and the intense chiaroscuro, Turneur manages to instill horror even in mundane, ordinary objects.
