Everybody Dies But Me
Katya, Vika and Zhanna are growing up in the rough suburbs of Moscow. Amidst their drab existence, repressive parents and the zero prospects offered by their socio-economic status, the only thing to look forward to is the school dance at the end of the week. But when school authorities threaten to cancel the event due to Katya’s improper conduct towards a teacher, they unwittingly put in motion a chain of events that will lead the girls to rebel against their teachers, their parents and each other. In her first feature film, experienced documentary maker Valeria Gaï Guermanika skillfully avoids clichés and uses innocence and cruelty in equal measures to shed harsh light on the story of a tough adolescence. Camera d’Or special mention at Cannes.
