Cherry Blossoms
When she learns that her husband is fatally ill, Trudi decides to conceal the truth and convince her husband to join her on a last trip together to see their grown-up children. Their final destination is Japan, but the elderly couple make a brief stop in Berlin, where their busy children make it all but clear that they’ re not welcome. When Trudi dies unexpectedly during the trip, her husband is forced to continue on his own. Reminiscent of Jazujiro Ozu’s masterpiece Tokyo Story, and in a sense continuing where Ozu left off, Doris Dörrie directs an unhurried, poetic film on the loneliness of old age and death. The film was included in the competition section at the Berlin Film Festival.
