Die Welle
Exasperated by his students’ smugness that ?the world knows better to let things like Nazism happen again,? their teacher decides to put their reflexes to the test by proposing an experiment, namely the institution of autocratic, overly ambitious and highly disciplinarian ruling elite right there in class. The students respond enthusiastically, but it is not long before they fall prey to Nazism’s hidden charm and the seemingly innocuous experiment soon spirals out of control. Based on the Todd Strasser best seller of the same title (which was in turn inspired by actual events at a Californian high school in 1967), Dennis Gansel’s new film is a chilling reminder that totalitarianism is closer to heart than we’d care to admit.
