CLUNY BROWN
"Masterpiece" is the only word that can describe Lubitsch's swansong. Tempering its character's sexually charged emotions with stylized finesse, "Cluny Brown" is a sharp satire of aristocratic mores delivered in Lubitsch's usual tongue-in-cheek style. Set in the interwar years, the film stars Cluny, the good-looking niece of a London plummer. When her uncle falls ill, she rolls up her sleeves and gets to work in his place. During one of her housecalls she meets Adam, a Czech refugee and aspiring author, whom she will see again when she finds work as a maid in a country manor. But when she is called to make a choice, Cluny will find herself torn between the security offered by her rich employer and her feelings towards the impoverished writer.
