Ditte and Peter are about to move to New York, where Ditte is finally given the chance to pursue her dream job. Their joint excitement, however, is cut short when Ditte's father falls gravely ill and demands that she cancels her plans in order to take over the prosperous family business as the Danish Royal Family's baking supplier. The clash is inevitable, as, apart from her internal dilemma, Ditte has to face a dejected Peter, who feels he always comes second best to her father's wishes. Christensen delivers a highly stylized study on the conflict between personal desires and duty, wrapped in the silence that surrounds disappointment and death.
