HEARTLESS

Jamie was born with a scarlet heart-shaped birthmark on his face; he didn't know then that this deformity would prove to be his undoing. Dragging his drab existence along the glum streets of East London, he is clearly ill-prepared for the two events that will change his life for ever: his mother's murder by one of the many gangs that plague the area and a visit by a mysterious man he has only seen in his dreams. The man has come to offer him what he yearns for the most: beauty. However, the devil was never known to play by the rules and a series of unexpected twists lead Jamie to those deep recesses of the soul that light cannot reach to wash away the horrors of tragedy. "I open the window and madness flies in," says Jamie at some point in the film. After a long absence that lasted 15 years, Philip Ridley returns with a compelling existential thriller that was well worth the wait.
