Before Goddard, Truffautt and the rest gang of Cahiers a young woman, in fact a 26 year old girl, shot the forst film of a movement that was about to rise six years later. Agnes Varda with her debut paved the way to the practical and theoritical foundation of the Nouvelle Vague. The story of an alienated couple returning from Paris to the fishing village the husband was born is Varda's cause to record in an almost documentaristic style the life outside urban centres. This dream debut carves words behind love and they flourish in images hewed by the dream editing of Alain Resnais. A the same time eerie voice-overs deliver the film such a unique quality making definition in any sort of category impossible.
