Silent Sonata
In a remote farm in the Balkans, a farmer’s wife has been shot dead by stray fire. The same evening, the farmer, seeing from afar a truck headed towards the house, hides his children in the basement and gets ready to clash with the intruders. What he thought was an enemy vehicle is in the end a travelling circus making a stop and carrying their dying director along. An elegant and sophisticated exercise on European magical realism by the Slovenian Janez Burger, who chooses to set his surreal war drama in an ambiguous time frame - and without any dialogue. A film with an unquestionable iconoclastic power, which, in our times of dominant TV storytelling, attempts to define what’s cinematic and what’s not.
