Amsterdam Global Village
The personal stories of a Moroccan courier, a businessman from Chechnya and a Bolivian immigrant with his newborn child, are intertwined in a pioneering way in this famous documentary, entirely shot in Amsterdam in the 90s. It’s a highly authentic and lively stroll around the everyday life of the Dutch capital, which, through observation, functions as a meditation and a parable of a miniature of the modern world, a mini-universe with its own rhythms and rules. Different cultures, diverse origins and contrasting impulses meet in a city that’s a melting pot of cultures evolving daily, according to what globalization dictates. Johan van der Keuken in “Amsterdam Global Village” creates an amazing medley of very personal stories and in the end presents a piercing, incisive and exceptional cinematic portrait of Amsterdam.
