My Sweet Pepper Land
A bitter sense of humour and atmospheric musical inserts complete a modest work of art, which rightfully gained a lot of supporters in the last Cannes Film Festival.
After the fall of Saddam Hussein, Baran, a Kurdish independence war hero, is appointed sheriff in a nearby border town. Shortly after his arrival, he meets new transplant Govend, a beautiful teacher who would rather teach in the middle of nowhere than succumb to her brothers’ pressure to get married.
Baran is called upon to contain smugglers who run wild in the territory, while he refuses to bow down to tribal chief Aga Azzi’s extortionate behavior. Govend, on the other hand, is fighting her own battle against conservatism and the two, inevitably bound by friendship, are targeted by Aga’s men. Hiner Saleem channels his agony over his homeland’s fragile future into the most authentic, ecumenical Western of the year, made up of familiar, yet exotic Middle Eastern ingredients.
