Rocks in my Pockets
The first animated film to ever screen in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is a brave attempt on Signe Baumane's part to confront the mental issues that have haunted most of the women in her family tree.
The first animated film to ever screen in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is a brave attempt on Signe Baumane's part to confront the mental issues that have haunted most of the women in her family tree.
Surrounded by beautiful, stream-of-consciousness sketches, the Latvian director, screenwriter and illustrator searches for the origins of her own personal demons, as she documents her relatives' lonely struggles with depression and self-destruction in last century Latvia. Posing as an atypical psychological detective, Baumane searches for redemption as she infiltrates the depths of the mysterious illness that plagues her and her ancestors, with honesty and a sense of humor.
At the same time, she has the maturity and the clarity to break the boundaries of her own plight, offering audiences valuable insight into women's place in society - especially those carrying the stigma of mental illness - in a country plagued by turmoil, form the German Occupation and Latvia's obligatory Soviet period until its still fragile independence.
