A dive into the abyss of the American Dream. Disarmed veterans, taciturn adolescents, drug addicts, ex-special forces soldiers, floundering young women, future mothers and old people who haven't lost the will to live. Forgotten by God and man, the residents of the Louisiana swamps make for some powerful viewing. Not for the faint-hearted.
A head-long dive into the abyss of the American Dream. Disarmed veterans, taciturn adolescents, drug addicts trying to escape addiction through love, ex-special forces soldiers still at war with the world, floundering young women and future mothers, and old men and women who have not lost their desire to live. Forgotten by god and man, this portrait of the residents of the Louisiana swamps in not for the faint-hearted. The fourth feature in 44-year-old director Roberto Minervini’s filmography is a rugged yet deeply poetic observational documentary that was rightfully nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at the last Cannes Film Festival. Minervini first got he idea for the film when he travelled to Louisiana to meet Todd Trichell, one of the characters in his previous documentary "Stop the Pounding Heart" (2013). Todd had managed to escape the poverty and violence of the Louisiana swamps, making a fresh start in the much healthier Texas environment, but his family is still sinking in the quicksand of a state in decline.
