In a battle in Saragossa during the Napoleonic Wars, an officer chances upon a strange manuscript. Cornered by an enemy soldier, he nevertheless convinces him to translate it and identifies its author and hero as his grandfather, Alfons van Worden. The manuscript itself is a metaphysical frame tale involving Alfons’s journey through the Sierra Morena Mountains and his encounters with ghosts, seductive demons, libertine nobility and cabbalists.
