A warm summer’s day, seemingly successful advertiser Ned Merrill appears out of nowhere wearing only his swimsuit and announces his decision to swim home via his neighbors' pools. His barmy plan is initially met with great enthusiasm, but as Ned progresses through his swimming journey, people’s friendliness gradually gives way to hostility. ?The smiling Burt Lancaster we see at the beginning gradually grows into a broken man, a sad figure of loss in a society that offers no redemption.?
