In a nation whose families were forced to have one child, a minor accident opens the back door of a middle-class family for a new member to enter. A young boy, who initially introduces himself as a "friend", but gradually asserts himself more and more as the only child. But what is his real motive and what will be the biological child's reaction to the intruder? Directing with a surgical precision that effortlessly evokes early Michael Haneke, Lin Jianjie manages to perfectly match paranoia with reality in a commanding thriller which underlines that the most disturbing stories reside in what we take for granted.
