On an island in Japan, school life follows the seasons’ cycle. The first snowflake means the boys have to swap baseball for hockey, but shy Takuya is more interested in a classmate who claims a career in figure skating. Although lost for words around her, her coach insists on having them practice together. It's impossible to describe the plot without revealing its catalytic twist. It's also impossible to foreshadow verbally how sensual and effortlessly beautiful the film is. In one of this year’s more radiant entries, the director's understated gaze invests in the poetry of everyday life while the charming simplicity of the visual compositions vindicates those who see in him the next Kore-eda.
