The starting point for Cousins' new film is the paintings of Wilhelmina Barnes-Graham. Through his idiosyncratic style, the director narrates the life and work of the important, though relatively unknown, British artist, reading (enter Tilda Swinton) pages from her personal diary and drawing on testimonials from the women who stood close to her. Amidst all this, there is a central event, an incident on a glacier in Switzerland that reveals the heart of the documentary. Cousins centers on the moment that changes everything, the one that gives birth to art or unlocks our ability to understand it. To the sudden awareness of beauty around us waiting to be discovered.
