To some, the idea that a child completes a relationship means nothing. For others, there will always be Maria and Christiane. The director, a personal friend, follows them through the last ten years of their relationship. During this time, they are fiercely trying to have a child. Around them, a society until recently unable to put the words ‘rights’ and ‘same-sex couples’ in the same sentence, tests them with formalities and rigidity. The film, however, does not stop there, as through inventive cinematography, interspersed with animation and moments of incredible emotional intensity, it focuses on the relationship. A deep love that tries to survive in the face of adversity and culminates in a heartbreaking essay poem, the kind that only life can make.
