Winner of the Silver Lion at the recent Venice Film Festival and South Korea’s official entry for the forthcoming Oscar for Best International Film, “Possible Love” marks the triumphant return of one of the most important directors in contemporary cinema. At the same time, it is one of the defining films of the year. It unfolds slowly, as almost every film by Lee Chang-dong does, methodically laying out a path that is always expected to lead to something greater and more revealing than the plot initially lead us to assume. Here, everything begins with a chance encounter: when two married couples from different social classes meet, at that very moment an invisible psychological mechanism is set in motion that will lead to friction and inevitable breakdown. Underlying tensions and repressed desires will endow most of the film. But when everything explodes that’s when “Possible Love” reveals its magnificence as an exploration of individual moral and emotional responsibility in a cold, materialistic world and a country where social inequalities remain irreconcilable. Loukas Katsikas

LEE CHANG-DONG

Acclaimed South Korean film director, screenwriter and novelist. Born in Daegu in 1954, he began his artistic career in theater and literature. He transitioned to filmmaking in his early forties, quickly establishing himself as a defining figure of Korean Cinema. He also served as South Korea’s Minister of Culture and Tourism from 2003 to 2004. His celebrated filmography is characterized by profound humanism, complex characters, and descriptions of societal trauma. His work frequently explores themes of grief, alienation and redemption.
