Mega-announcement: Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" comes to the 30th Athens International Film Festival
The much-discussed magnum opus by Francis Ford Coppola will have its Greek premiere at the 30th anniversary edition of the Athens International Film Festival.
"Megalopolis" has been the cinematic dream of Francis Ford Coppola that hasn't faded for over four decades. In his career, filled with titanic films, movies commissioned to pay off debts, and efforts toward independent, experimental cinema, this particular project remained for years the most famous unmade film- until this year.
In 2024, "Megalopolis" turned from a "big idea" into reality, competed for the Palme d'Or at the recent Cannes Film Festival, and in a few weeks, you will have the chance to be among the first to see it at the 30th Athens International Film Festival.
The very existence of this film provokes elevated emotion. “Megalopolis” is a torrential sci-fi allegory, featuring an architect/scientist pioneer with the ability to regulate time and space, who bases his dream of a utopian metropolis of the future on a miraculous construction material. Coppola draws unexpected parallels between the sociopolitical conditions that led ancient Rome to destruction and the image of a contemporary America undermined by similar dangers and driven by similar passions. A baroque satire of human vanity and a kind of romantic legacy for future generations, this is a magnum opus of such audacity and daring directorial folly, the likes of which is rarely seen in cinema anymore.
The film's impressive cast includes Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Giancarlo Esposito.
The screening of "Megalopolis" will take place on the Main Stage of the Onassis Stegi on Friday, October 11, under specially designed conditions with which it is being presented at selected venues worldwide..
"Megalopolis" will be released in cinemas on November 28 by Feelgood Entertainment.
The full program of the 30th Athens International Film Festival will be announced during the Press Conference on Wednesday, September 25th 2024, at 18:30, at the "Auditorium Theo Angelopoulos" of the French Institute of Greece in Athens.
